Series Mania 2024: BBC Studios acquired Spanish company Brutal Media

As Brutal Media founders, Raimon Masllorens and Nèlida Sanchez, will continue to lead the local team, Isabel Durán, Director of Format Sales for BBC Studios for Iberia, will take on the new role of Entertainment Head within the Brutal Media team.

BBC Studios has announced the acquisition of the Spanish production company Brutal Media, based in Barcelona. Brutal Media founders, Raimon Masllorens and Nèlida Sanchez, will continue to lead the local team. Isabel Durán, who has been the Director of Format Sales for BBC Studios for Iberia since October 2022 will take on the new role of Entertainment Head within the Brutal Media team.

After becoming part of BBC Studios, Brutal Media will continue to develop and market its catalog of original IPs in Spain, and will also produce local adaptations of unscripted and fiction formats from the BBC Studios' catalog. The British company will also support the international distribution and production of Brutal Media's original IPs.

BBC Studios had recently announced the acquisition of Werner Film Productions, based in Melbourne, Australia. The acquisition of Brutal Media raises the total number of territories where BBC Studios has production bases to 12, and supports the company's goal to double the size of its business from 2021/22 to 2027/28.

Founded in 2009, Brutal Media produces both scripted and unscripted content. Among the projects in progress are the fiction series "Asalto al Banco Central", for Netflix, and "La academia", the first fiction series from Sony Pictures Television in Spain, for Prime Video and 3Cat. Other already released productions by Brutal include "Bienvenidos a Edén" (for Netflix), the sports documentary "The End of the Storm" (for Sky TV and Liverpool FC) and true crime documentaries for Netflix "Las cintas de Rosa Peral" and "El caso Wanninkhof-Carabantes".
