Spirit Studios, Hearst Networks EMEA, and BossaNova Media announced a new true crime docudrama exploring the twisted mind of the killer who inspired "Psycho," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and "The Silence of the Lambs." "Ed Gein: Original Psycho" (2x60’) is based on the reconstructed transcripts of Gein’s original confessions from November 1957, brought to life via state-of-the-art AI generative technology and through a chilling performance by an actor portraying the detective who led the real-life interrogation.

Spirit Studios' Creative Director and Co-founder, Matt Campion, said: “This is not just another retelling of a notorious case - it’s an invitation into the fractured mind of Ed Gein, told in a way that’s as immersive as it is unsettling. We wanted to create something that pushes the boundaries of true crime storytelling and resonates with a global audience."

Hearst Networks EMEA, Head of Acquisitions, Kelly Hornsby, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Spirit Studios and BossaNova in this two-part Special for Crime+Investigation UK. Use of pioneering production techniques and innovative storytelling methods, enable us to give an entirely fresh and revelatory insight into the life and times of one of America’s most infamous killers”.

Claire Runham, Head of Acquisitions at BossaNova, said: “We’re excited to be entering into our first collaboration with Spirit Studios. Both Spirit and BossaNova have a strong track record in the true crime genre, making this partnership all the more meaningful as we join forces to deliver programmes that are disturbingly authentic. Ed Gein: Original Psycho will bring viewers face to face with one of history’s most notorious killers - the man whose crimes inspired some of Hollywood’s most iconic and terrifying horror films. With the third series of Netflix’s Monster franchise coming up, featuring Charlie Hunnam as Gein, we’re anticipating major buzz around the films and for them to make waves internationally.”

"Ed Gein: Original Psycho" premieres this autumn on Hearst Networks UK’s Crime+Investigation, with international distribution handled by BossaNova Media. It is directed by Matt Campion and produced by Martin Sadofski, and filmed on location in the UK and USA, the series features criminal psychologists, forensic experts, and those who knew Gein personally to lay bare the twisted origins of one of America’s most notorious killers. As the series details the chilling discoveries made by police inside Gein’s Wisconsin farmhouse, and the psychological investigation that followed, the line between documentary and horror becomes blurred.
