According to the research firm, Comscore, there was a 30% year-over-year increase in average video on demand (VOD) transactions per household subscribed to a VOD service. The figure reflects households that are either accessed, purchased or rented 16 different VOD titles during March 2020.
As a three-month update, Comscore analyzed how exactly the transactions peaked and during the first months of the outbreak. Transactional on Demand (TOD) transactions peaked in April, remaining above 12 million during the first three months of the pandemic, March through May. The peak month of April 2020 represented a 33% increase in TOD transactions from February 2020.
Similar to TOD, subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) transactions also peaked in April 2020 with over 262 million transactions, but later decreased in May 2020, slowly shifting back to pre-Covid figures. Free on Demand (FOD) transactions has long exceeded the other categories with the highest transaction rates. The service also peaked in April 2020, remaining steady through May. FOD transactions recorded 518 million in April 2020 and 515 million in May 2020, which represents a less than one% decrease month-over-month.
The greatest year-over-year increase occurring during April, as well as VOD. VOD increased by 24% in April 2020 over April 2019. Transactions declined in May 2020 but remained about 9% higher than May 2019. During peak time, various VOD categories saw increases in their transaction numbers, with double-digit percentage points higher than in April 2019. However, Sports and Fitness received 232% and 486% increases in transactions in April 2020. The sports category tripled in May 2020, 925% higher than Sports transactions in May 2019.
