Prime Video was identified by Ampere Analysis as the top choice for those looking to spend the holiday season hunkered down with a selection of acquired Christmas content. For the fourth year in a row, Prime Video’s streaming catalogue in October 2022 featured more movie and TV titles containing the words, “Christmas,” “Santa,” “Reindeer,” or “Snow” than any other SVOD service globally.
Representing 13% of all Christmas titles available to stream globally, Prime Video’s festive content was primarily Children & Family (48%), with Romance accounting for a further 27% of titles. However, the streamer favours acquired content, with original content representing just 1% of all Prime Video’s Christmas titles.
For those looking for a more curated viewing experience, smaller SVOD services with fewer titles had a better average critical rating across their festive titles in October 2022, Ampere Analysis noted. Indeed, with a catalogue of just five acquired Christmas films, titles from international SVOD company Mubi had a better average critical rating score than those from any other streaming company.
Meanwhile, October 2022 saw Netflix boast more festive originals than any other streamer and, despite troublesome timelines and endless plot-holes, expand its Christmas cinematic universe with 25% more Christmas originals available to stream on the platform in October 2022 than in October 2021. Most Netflix Christmas Originals were Movies (69%).
“While Netflix faces increasing pressure from rival commissioners moving into the world of festive titles (Netflix Originals’ share of all original Christmas content available to stream in October 2022 was 43%, down from 60% a year earlier), non-Netflix festive originals titles are evenly distributed across a high volume of streamers, making Netflix the best-stocked one-stop shop for original Christmas content,” concluded Olivia Deane, Senior Analyst at Ampere Analysis and the author of the report.
