During its first quarter of 2020 earnings call, Disney confirmed that its streaming service Disney+ has hit 28.6 million subscribers in its first three months. The number is ahead of the 25 million that had been predicted by Wall Street Analysts.

The company did not break out how many are from the United States and how many are from the international territories where it’s been made available, but it said the “vast majority” came from domestic.

“Disney+’s success is due to our incredible portfolio of great brands, the outstanding content from our creative engines and a robust technology platform,”  said Bob Iger, CEO of the company. “The launch of Disney+ has been enormously successful exceeding even our greatest expectations,”  he added.

Iger also commented that though the quarter ended with 26.5 million paid subscribers, as of Monday February 3, the streamer – which hosts shows such as “The Mandalorian,” “The World According To Jeff Goldblum” and “The Simpsons” – was tracking at 28.6 million paid subscribers. Of those clients, Iger pointed that “about 20%” came from Verizon, with the US mobile operator offering the service as a free bundled bonus for premium subscribers. Approximately half of the subscriptions came directly through Disneyplus.com.

Disney also disclosed that the ESPN Plus service, which bowed in April 2018, has reached 6.6 million subscribers as of year’s end. Hulu, which Disney now fully controls, has hit 30.4 million subscribers. Of those, only 3.2 million also pay for Hulu’s live TV channel bundle, but that number has nearly doubled in the past year from 1.7 million. Hulu subs overall are up from 22.8 million in December 2018.
