In the shadows
The European distributor, Newen Connect, is heading to Cannes for this year’s MIPCOM with a line-up of premium titles across scripted, unscripted, and kids & family, marking its widest slate for the market to date. Key scripted titles cover the broad spectrum of the genre and include the high-end "Cat’s Eyes" inspired by the manga comics of Tsukasa Hojo, Clapperboard and Pale Rebel Productions’ thriller "The Teacher," political thriller "In the Shadows," based on the novel by Edouard Philippe and Gilles Boyer, police procedurals "Carpe Diem" and "Flashback," as well as murder mystery "Erica," based on the worldwide best-selling novel by Camilla Läckberg.
Unscripted titles include "0 to 9: The Secret History of Numbers," exploring the fascinating genesis and history of our numeral systems; "Maya: The Demise of an Empire," charting what may have caused the fall of one of the world’s most advanced civilizations; revealing insights into tensions between Africa and their former colonial European powers in "Africa vs Western Powers: The Underside of a Divorce;" and looking at the technologies being used by world leaders to protect them while taking to the air in "Presidential Planes."
Newen Connect’s Kids & Family titles, in the meantime, include two titles from the Newen Studios Group: "Tall and Small’s" magical animated adventure series "Flora & Lars;" and ultimate karting challenge "Luna & Loops," a 52 x 11’ animated action adventure from Blue Spirit Productions. Available from the end of 2024, the series has already been a hit on TF1, delivering an average 27.5% audience share and almost 170,000 plays on the TF1+ platform.
Co-production and pre-financing will also be up for discussion, including two further kids' titles from Blue Spirit: "The Borrowers," due in Q4 2025 and already available for presales, as well as the third season of preschool animation, "Alice & Lewis," inspired by the children’s classic "Alice in Wonderland."
Leona Connell, Chief Commercial Officer, Newen Connect mentioned the breadth and variety of the company's offering: “Newen Connect will be arriving in Cannes this year with a lineup that promises something for everyone. From edge-of-your-seat drama, to fascinating documentaries and fun and endearing shows for the kids, I’m proud that we’re able to showcase such a rich array of the best of European programming, all underpinned by the high-quality production values that are a hallmark of our catalogue," noted.
As well as these key titles, Newen Connect teams will be showcasing a range of previously announced award-winning projects, including political thrillers "Moresnet" (Canneseries official competition) and "8 Months" (International Panorama, Series Mania), as well as a slate of hugely successful police procedurals: "Mademoiselle Holmes," "Panda," "Master Crimes," "The Manny," and "Better Call Dad," all of which will be available as sophomore seasons.
