The 2020 International Emmy for News was presented to “Hong Kong Year of Living Dangerously” (Channel 4 News / ITN, United Kingdom), showing how in 2019, Hong Kong surprised itself, China and the rest of the world. Meanwhile, the International Emmy for Current Affairs was presented to “Undercover: Inside China's Digital Gulag” (Hardcash Productions / ITV, United Kingdom), in which ITV went undercover into China's secretive Xinjiang region.

Both International Emmys were presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences during an online ceremony in conjunction with the US News Emmys. Entered programs were broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2019, in accordance with the competition's eligibility period and thus did not include any coverage about Covid-19 or social justice.

"Tonight, we are privileged to recognize the courageous journalists behind these excellent programs. It has been fashionable in some places to talk a lot about fake news, but the nominated programs make it clear that the news coverage around the world is not only not fake, but essential to people conducting their lives in these complicated times,"  said Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, while presenting the Emmys.
