The Spanish psychological thriller series "Shades" and the Bulgarian drama "Shattered Bonds" are heading this year’s Beta slate for the European Film Market at Berlinale. The SkyShowtime Original Shades, starring Elsa Pataky (The Fast and the Furious, Furiosa – A Mad Max Saga) as well as Money Heist’s Enrique Arce and Hovik Keuchkerian, is part of the Berlinale Industry showcase “Spanish Thrillers” (Feb 17, 4pm). Shattered Bonds with The White Lotus’ Julian Kostov will be the focus of the EFM showcase “Narratives Against Rising Youth Violence” on Feb 18, 1.15pm.
"Shades" follows six troubled patients who gather for a weekend retreat at a picturesque vineyard to complete a famed psychiatrist’s unconventional treatment. When the doctor is found murdered, Lieutenant Héctor Castro delves into a tangle of secrets where each patient holds a motive—and even the enigmatic psychiatrist’s daughter and Castro himself may have something to hide. The show is produced by Secuoya Studios and Stellarmedia for SkyShowtime. As international partner, Beta Film handles the distribution rights outside of SkyShowtime’s markets.
The Bulgarian drama "Shattered Bonds" is based on the award-winning novel "The Mothers" by Teodora Dimova, translated into nine languages. The series explores the painful consequences of fractured parent-child relationships and the impact on life decisions. It is produced by Overlock Entertainment and Albion Films for Nova Broadcasting Group (the prime broadcaster of the series), and with the support of the Bulgarian National Film Centre. Director was Viktor Chouchkov and as DOP served Alexander Stanishev. "Shattered Bonds" is also supported by UNICEF Bulgaria, which will launch the "Stand by Me" campaign to raise awareness of most important conversation - the one between children and parents. “When parents actively listen and engage with their children - whether about their fears, dreams, daily experiences or difficult topics - they create a foundation for trust, emotional well-being, resilience and healthy development”, said UNICEF Bulgaria representative Christina de Bruin about the campaign.
The group is furthermore featured at the Berlinale Series Market with "Euphorie" by Beta subsidiary Zeitsprung Pictures. The series is part of the “Up Next: Germany” showcase on Feb 17 at 11.30am. This new adaptation of the Israeli teen drama Euphoria offers a European re-interpretation of the acclaimed HBO's hit series of the same name. In addition, the Beta Group is premiering several features and a series during the festival. Beta Cinema represents Berlinale opening title "The Light" by Tom Tykwer (Babylon Berlin; Run Lola Run) and the Panorama entry "Cicadas" by Ina Weisse (The Audition). As official Berlinale television entry, "Other People’s Money" will run as sole television series in the Panorama section. Beta subsidiary Sommerhaus will celebrate the world premiere of "No Beast. So Fierce," a retelling of William Shakespeare’s tragedy of Richard III at Berlinale Special.
