Ahead of its launch in the second half of the year in Spain, HBO Max announced the green light and the start of production of the 6x50’ Max Original “Dolores: La Verdad Sobre El Caso Wanninkhof” (The Truth About The Wanninkhof Case), a true crime documentary about Dolores Vázquez, victim of one of the biggest judicial mistakes in Spain’s recent history.
In September 2000, Dolores Vázquez was arrested as the main suspect in the murder of the young Rocío Wanninkhof, daughter of her ex-partner. The case sparked a media frenzy in Spain that shocked the public and pressured the police to find answers quickly. In the press, Dolores was stigmatized for her sexuality, her character, and her apparent indifference to the case, and she was described as a cold, calculating, and intelligent killer. The consequences would change Dolores' life forever: she was incarcerated and spent 519 days in prison for a crime she never committed.
Now, for the first time in 20 years, Vázquez speaks publicly about his painful past and addresses questions that have yet to be answered. The series seeks to reconstruct the story from all points of view, using archival footage, interviews with key protagonists, and an accurate fictional reconstruction of the events. It is a Unicorn production that will premiere in the second half of 2021 exclusively on HBO Max.
“For the first time in 20 years, Dolores Vázquez speaks publicly to tell her version of the events in this high-profile case, one of the most serious judicial mistakes in the history of Spain. The story has been told many times, but it has never been complete, as protagonists have always been missing. This time we are going to tell the full story. Reality always surpasses fiction, and in this case it becomes more apparent than ever. It's a thriller loaded with twists and turns and a controversial and passionate personal story,” described Xelo Montesinos, Founder and CEO of Unicorn Content.
Miguel Salvat, Executive Producer of HBO Max, added: “The Wanninkhof case kept an entire country and its media in suspense. Twenty years later, we are going to show it from a totally different point of view. Dolores Vázquez speaks frankly, telling her story, raw and painful, with the benefit of the passage of time. For those who think that this could not happen today, I ask why it happened then”.
