"Pirate Coasts"
Quintus Studios has commissioned a new digital-first documentary series examining piracy and maritime crime in South-East Asia. "Pirate Coasts" (1 x 60’) is the latest Quintus Original to premiere on the company’s flagship AVOD channel, Free Documentary which has over 5.4m subscribers.
The pilot episode "Terror on the Asian Seas" has secured German free-to-air broadcaster WELT as a pre-sale partner and forms part of Quintus Studios’ ongoing strategy to produce high-quality factual content for both digital and linear distribution. "Pirate Coasts" is the latest in a growing slate of Quintus Originals aimed at addressing contemporary global issues through factual storytelling. Produced in-house by Development and Production Executive Frederick Gillingham, the film explores the region’s strategic importance to global trade and investigates the ongoing risks posed by Asian maritime piracy.
With thousands of vessels passing through these waters each year, transporting vital goods and raw materials, the region is a key artery in the global supply chain. However, the same waters have long been home to organised criminal networks, pirate gangs, and violent groups who continue to operate with impunity in certain areas.
The documentary investigates the historical roots of piracy in the region and examines the factors driving modern maritime crime. It also looks at the organisations and initiatives working to improve security and reduce incidents of piracy and hijacking across key shipping routes.
Quintus Studios operates a portfolio of premium factual YouTube channels, including Free Documentary, Free Documentary History, and ENDEVR, reaching millions of viewers globally. The company is at the forefront of digital-first documentary production, blending traditional storytelling with data-driven audience insights.
Adam Jacobs, Creative Director at Quintus Studios, who commissioned the pilot and is executive producer highlighted the relevance of the topic addressed by the documentary; “Maritime piracy is still a prevalent issue in some parts of the world and this pilot episode provides an unfiltered insight into those who are doing it and those who are suffering because of it. This is another premium production from Fred who secured great access to those involved in this illegal activity," commented.
