Sagafilm and Cineflix Rights recently unveiled the return of political drama "The Minister" for a second season.“We were thrilled with the reception for the first season of The Minister, and we are excited to be able to bring fans a new installment," Kjartan Thor Thordarson, CEO of Sagafilm Nordic and Executive Producer of the series said. "Benedikt is back, but now the nation and the other world leaders know about his medical condition, how will he find a way back into top-level politics when he’s been deemed unfit to rule? It’s a dilemma relevant to viewers in many different countries.”
Cineflix has gained exclusive worldwide distribution rights to "The Minister" and presold Season Two to Viaplay for its streaming platforms in the UK and Germany. Additional deals are currently in the works.The eight-part series has been commissioned by Iceland’s RUV together with DR in Denmark, SVT in Sweden, NRK in Norway, and YLE in Finland. Season One of the series sold to broadcasters and streamers alongside Viaplay including SBS in Australia, AMC Networks International Southern Europe, HBO Max in the Nordics, Topic in the US and Canada, Filmin in Spain, TVO in Canada, Canal+ in Czech Republic and Slovakia, and Hot in Israel.
"The Minister" stars Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Benedikt Ríkharðsson, the Icelandic Prime Minister whose medical condition threatens the stability of the government and the private lives of the team around him. Anita Briem reprises her role as Steinunn, the woman behind husband Benedikt’s success and his political career. After the dramatic finale of Season One, in which he publicly reveals his bipolar disorder to the entire nation, Benedikt is back and this time he wants to change the country’s approach to mental health. However, branded as the poster child for mental illness, it proves difficult for Benedikt to find his feet. Meanwhile there is a power struggle within the political system, with individuals from different factions competing to take control, and willing to stop at nothing to get their way. Benedikt becomes caught up in the whirlwind of power struggles while trying to fix what is most important to him, his own and other people’s mental health.
"The Minister II" will see the return of some familiar faces from season one such as Thorvaldur Kristjansson and Joel Sæmundsson. Season Two of The Minister is written by Birkir Blær and Jónas Margeir Ingólfsson.
