Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are teaming up for a movie adaptation of Sega's OutRun video game franchise. Universal Pictures is backing the project, with Bay set to direct and produce, while Sweeney will also produce. Jayson Rothwell is writing the screenplay. Bay and Brad Fuller are producing through Platinum Dunes’ first-look deal with the studio. Toru Nakahara will produce for Sega, with Sega Corporation president Shuji Utsumi overseeing the film.

However, plot details remain unclear. Sega’s OutRun series originated from one of the most successful arcade games of the 1980s, pioneering a new genre of driving games and even inspiring an electronic music subgenre known as “OutRun.” This unique combination helped the game become a global sensation. Over the years, numerous installments have been released, including versions for home consoles, cementing OutRun as one of Sega’s flagship franchises.

As the video game adaptation trend continues to gain momentum, Universal is no stranger to transforming them into successful films. The title will follow in the footsteps of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Five Nights at Freddy’s", which collectively earned $1.4 billion and $290 million at the global box office, respectively.
