A boom time for the Latin American subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) market could be just around the corner, with the number of customers set to more than double between the end of 2019 and 2025 to 100.35 million, according to a new study from Digital TV Research.
By individual territory, the “Latin America SVOD Forecasts” report found that Brazil will remain the market leader, with 36 million SVOD subscriptions forecast by 2025 – up by 20 million on 2019. Mexico will follow and have 28 million gross SVOD subs by 2025, up by 16 million on last year.
Company-wise, Latin America is set to experience a wave of US-based platform launches over the next year. Digital TV Research noted that, in spite of the poor economic conditions in a number of countries, the popular Disney+ service will be a hit when it becomes available in the region in November. Hulu, HBO Max and ViacomCBS are all also expected to debut during 2021.
Despite the extra competition, long-established SVOD market leader Netflix will likely continue to grow, but its dominance is set for decline. The report predicts that Netflix will have 47.4 million subscriptions by 2025, up from 31.4 million in 2019, while Disney+ is expected to grow rapidly following its November 2020 launch, with 25 million subs by 2025.
