Apple Inc. plans to add augmented reality content to its Apple TV+ streaming video service. The AR feature is expected to debut next year, ahead of an Apple headset in 2022 that will be built around augmented and virtual reality.
The new display of features such as elements of a TV show, characters, and objects will be integrated with the surrounding environment. The option can soon be accessed from Apple’s TV app on the iPhone or iPad. With the new feature, the company intends to seek new ways to attract and retain subscribers and drive interest in AR technology.
Apple began its promotion on 1st November 2019, the day it launched Apple TV Plus, giving buyers of Macbooks, iPhones, and other gadgets 12 months free of the USD 4.99-a-month subscription platform. The company last disclosed a user count for Apple TV Plus in May, revealing the service had around 10 million users. It’s widely believed that many, or even most of these users are on the free promo.
Apple is considering an extension of the promotion when it expires on 31st October, which will be just weeks after it debuts the latest iteration of its iPhone mobile device. If the promotion is brought back, it might extend for less than 12 months.
For 2022, Apple is preparing to launch a headset that mixes augmented and virtual reality with a focus on gaming, video consumption, and virtual meetings, Bloomberg has reported. An AR-only pair of glasses is planned for as early as 2023. The AR feature for TV+ would give Apple more content to show off on future products when they debut. Currently, Apple’s only consumer AR features on the iPhone are the Measure app and Animojis. The company otherwise relies on third-party developers to provide AR tools.
