During the second day of Digital MIPTV, sports icon, entrepreneur and founder of production company Studio 99, David Beckham, provided a special keynote where he talked about launching his own production company and current projects in production and development for a variety of global networks.

“Five years before my retirement I started setting up my business. I planned to build the business and also build different elements of it. Then, I surrounded myself with the right team, because in my career I was successful because of the teams I was with,”  Beckham commented. Then, he took a moment to review his football career and choose the moments and goals that meant the most to him.

Later, the former footballer referred to the creation of content, admitting his admiration for what American basketball player LeBron James did with his company SpringHill Entertainment. “The studio part was something that really excited and inspired me. I wanted to really be able to create content and be in control of that content,”  he said. In addition, he assured that now that platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon are betting on documentaries like "The Last Dance," there is a great opportunity in that genre.

Regarding projects, Beckham confirmed the development of “Save Our Squad,” a title that will debut on Disney+. Billed as a heart-warming series, the show will feature Beckham returning to the East London football pitches where he played as a child, where he will mentor a young grassroots side, struggling to survive in the league.

“It is something that I’m really excited about. This show is about giving back and giving young kids the opportunity to work with me, listen to my experience, because I was there playing like them. I think it is going to be an incredible experience for me and hopefully for the kids as well,” the sports icon expressed.

Lastly, the founder of production company Studio 99 referred to three more projects he is involved in: “A Whole New Ball Game,” a BBC series charting the contemporary history of the Premier League; “World War Shoe,” a documentary mini-series charting the untold story behind sports brands Adidas and Puma; and the upcoming definitive David Beckham biopic.
