Global OTT subscriptions have surpassed 1.5 billion, little more than two years after exceeding 1 billion subscriptions in the first half of 2020, Ampere Analysis revealed in its latest report. The United States and China combined represent roughly half of the global total, with the first one surpassing 400 million subscriptions at a similar time to the global total hitting 1.5 billion.

Regarding platforms, Netflix and Prime Video represent the two largest SVOD services in the world. However, combining Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar sees The Walt Disney Company's streaming services overtaking Prime Video subscriptions in 2022, making it the second largest streaming service in the world, behind Netflix.

“While mature markets are beginning to reach saturation, there is still room for growth in subscription OTT globally. Emerging markets will help the total approach 2 billion in the next few years, with more than 1 billion of those forecast to be from outside of the United States and China,”  said Toby Holleran, Research Manager at Ampere Analysis and the author of the report.
