The documentary will open the Portuguese Surf Film Festival on July 23rd and will then premiere on Odisseia/ Odisea channel on July 25th. "BIG vs SMALL" will also premiere on DPG Media’s channel in July 2021, the deal was executed by Ole Steen Stolberg, Escapade agent for the Nordics and Benelux.
When Filmmaker Minna Dufton started her documentary about elite big wave champion surfer, the “tiny fighter” Joana Andrade who rides the powerhouse waves at Nazaré, Portugal, little did she know Joana harbored a secret that could keep her from the waves. By way of explaining the safety equipment big wave surfers use, Joana revealed her fear of drowning, something many big wave surfers share. In that one extraordinary moment, a remarkable cinematic serendipity would unfold and bring together the tiny Portuguese surfer with Finnish world champion free diver, Johanna Nordblad, for the most unusual of training sessions.
"BIG vs SMALL" (1x52’ & 76’ 4K) is a modern-day fairytale stretching from the raging monster waves in the south to the dark stillness of a far-north, frozen Finnish lake; it’s about power and strength on top of the water, and facing demons under it. It’s about trust, it’s about letting go, and it’s about what happens when two elite female champions share their extraordinary talent with each other.
Minna Dufton states: “It has never been ‘just’ surfers or ‘just’ film festival audiences who respond to Joana Andrade’s story, but rather a global audience who connects so deeply with the human condition they see in the film. I am so proud to add Belgium, Spain and Portugal to our growing global BIG vs SMALL community!"
Natalie Lawley, Escapade Media's Managing Director, comments “'BIG vs SMALL' appeals to global audiences, as the film inspires viewers to face and overcome their fears. Whilst being very poignant at the moment, this film is timeless. Set against a cinematic backdrop of various countries, this incredible story is a must-see documentary”.
