eOne to globally distribute “Operación Marea Negra” spanish thriller

The deal, serving as the first of its kind to include a Spanish-language thriller series, forms part of a general company strategy that aims to garner a slate a dramas from various parts of the world.

Entertainment One has acquired the international distribution rights, with the exception of Spain and Portugal to the epic drama based on real-life events, "Operación Marea Negra.” The agreement marks he company's original Spanish-language acquisition. “We are very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in producing this ambitious and technical series with our incredibly talented cast and crew. This has been a massive undertaking as we created two different semi-submersibles and transported a technical crew of 70 people to Portugal,” said Mamen Quintas and Julio Casal, co-executive producers of Ficción Producciones. 

 The deal for the show produced by Amazon Prime Video and Ficción Producciones was brokered by Noel Hedges, eOne’s EVP, Acquisitions, International Distribution, with Mamen Quintas and Julio Casal serving as executive producers on behalf of the Portuguese Ukbar Filmes, working alongside  FORTA, led by TVG, and the Portuguese RTP.  With high-quality production values, a talented international cast, and a gripping tale at its core, this exceptional true story is destined to captivate audiences as a true-event miniseries," Hedges said.

The series will be directed by Daniel Calparsoro, Oskar Santos and João Maia. Forming as part of eOne’s ongoing strategy to acquire high-quality, premium programming that complements its portfolio of world-class content.  “It has been a tremendous journey and we’re delighted to be partnering with eOne to bring this remarkable series to audiences around the world," Casal continued.

The four-part series centers on the first narco-submarine intercepted in Europe, the traffickers aboard the vessel, and the investigators in their pursuit. Set in November 2019 and inspired by real events, "Operación Marea Negra" follows three companions as they attempt to cross the Atlantic in a homemade sub loaded with more than 3,000 kilos of cocaine. While aboard, they fight for survival, battling storms, unpredictable currents, hunger, infighting, and the authorities.
