GLOBO HAS ACHIEVED CARBON NEUTRALITY ACROSS ITS ENTIRE BUSINESS

Globo has been certified as a 100% carbon neutral company across its operations in Brazil. This means that all its buildings and activities offset their carbon emissions during the year 2019. Last year, the carbon-neutral certification was awarded to all of its five owned-and-operated television stations for offsetting 100% of their carbon emissions in 2018. With the green initiative extended to all companies, six more buildings have successfully achieved their goal of net-zero GHG emissions. Globo’s Carbon Neutral Certification, granted by ABNT (Brazilian National Standards Organization), is the result of an in-depth study carried out by the company to measure its corporate carbon footprint, as well as the direct reflection of a continuous process to incorporate sustainable measures into activities across the business.

“This is one more important milestone for the company, a true testament of its commitment to sustainability. Its consistent efforts aimed at achieving carbon neutrality for all its operations are also in line with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, said Mauricio Gonzalez, Director of the Shared Services Center at Globo.

The introduction of a fleet of flexible-fuel vehicles, capable of running on biodiesel blends, and the replacement of Globo Studio's internal circulation buses with battery-powered electric vehicles are some of the green initiatives that have enabled the company to reduce its GHG emissions, in addition to many others which have already been incorporated into the day-to-day reality of the company. Some of these sustainable practices include the treatment of 100% of all the sewage and industrial wastewater produced at the Globo Studios; generation of 90% of its power from renewable energy sources; reduction of diesel generators used in the production of live shows and implementation of 100% of LED lighting in all company buildings and premises.

Besides this, the company has been enhancing its recycling process and the reverse logistics of the waste generated in its activities, such as wood, leftover paint, batteries and tires, glass, plastic caps, and organic waste; finalizing the implementation of the selective collection in all of its buildings; and investing in awareness-raising and training of its collaborators. Enhancing initiatives that have already been implemented and adopting new sustainable practices over the past few years reiterates Globo’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions.

Besides establishing controls on the emissions produced by its offices, Globo has also been able to reduce its business carbon footprint through the purchase of carbon credits: from 49,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) to 21,000 metric tons. The purchase will benefit two projects: the small hydroelectric power plant (SHP) of Numerco, located on the River Ivaí (RS), through the generation of jobs; and Biofílica’s REDD+, an initiative that promotes the reduction of GHG emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, the conservation, sustainable management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in the Amazon Rainforest region, in the state of Pará.
