"Frauds"
ITV’s Director of Drama, Polly Hill, has commissioned a six-part heist drama, "Frauds", starring BAFTA and RTS award-winning actresses Suranne Jones and Jodie Whittaker as skilled confidence tricksters who’ve been separated by an arduous 10-year prison sentence. The title will air on ITV and STV and be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player, with Helen Ziegler, Senior Drama Commissioning Editor, overseeing production on behalf of the broadcaster.
Sam, played by Jodie Whittaker ("Time", "One Night", "Doctor Who", "Broadchurch"), has been living a quiet, anonymous life in the hills of Southern Spain, while her grifting partner, Bert, played by Suranne Jones ("Maryland", "Vigil", "Gentleman Jack", "Doctor Foster", "Scott & Bailey"), has spent the last decade in a Spanish prison, eager to pull off one final job to prove her worth.
Commented Helen Ziegler: “We are thrilled to be working with Suranne, Anne-Marie, and the brilliant team at Monumental on their unique take on a heist show. At its core, this is a story of a complex and surprising friendship, asking whether Sam and Bert can reunite for one last job or if their past will ruin them. Suranne and Jodie are exceptional actors, and it will be exciting to see what they bring to the central roles.”
Independent production company Monumental Television ("The Marlow Murder Club", "Maryland", "Harlots", "Ghosts", "Murder in Provence") will produce "Frauds" in association with ITV Studios. The show is a co-production with TeamAkers, the production company founded by Suranne Jones and Laurence Akers.
Executive Producer and co-creator Suranne Jones referred to the fulfillment of an old desire: “Working on 'Frauds' with Anne-Marie and Monumental over the past two years has been a wild ride. We took the concept of toxic female friendship and gave it a fresh twist, adding an emotional core to the heist genre. I've always wanted to work with Jodie, and now I finally am. I hope audiences enjoy Bert and Sam and all their schemes as much as we do," expressed.
Alison Owen and Katie Kelly, Executive Producers for Monumental Television, praised the title: "'Frauds' is the brilliant creation of Suranne Jones and Anne-Marie O’Connor. We’re honored and thrilled to collaborate with them once again and bring this extraordinary story to the screen," noted.
Set in the picturesque mountains of Southern Spain, it's clear from the start that Sam and Bert’s relationship is plagued by unresolved issues tied to their criminal past. Their fierce friendship is complicated by deep mistrust, and with Bert facing the final weeks of her life, she has no one else to turn to. Sam, burdened with guilt and a past she wants to forget, reluctantly agrees to take her ailing former friend into her home. Despite trying to maintain distance, Sam is quickly pulled back into their toxic and addictive bond.
ITV Studios will handle the international distribution of the series. Both Suranne Jones and Anne-Marie O’Connor are represented by The Artists Partnership, who have negotiated the deals for the drama.
