The Ripple Effect has announced that India’s Karman Unlimited has optioned the Brazilian drama series “Love is a Stranger,” produced by Visom Digital, to create a localized remake for the Indian market. The deal marks a significant milestone in the international expansion of the series, which is based on true events and has been praised for its raw and realistic portrayal of violence against women.
Carlos de Andrade, Producer at Visom Digital, stated: “’Love is a Stranger’ is a story that speaks to our deepest responsibility as storytellers—to shine light on issues that society too often overlooks. We are proud that this Brazilian story will now find new life and meaning in dialogue with audiences around the world.”
Sunita Uchil, CEO of Karman Unlimited, added: “This series represents the kind of bold, purposeful storytelling that Karman Unlimited champions. By collaborating with Visom Digital and The Ripple Effect, we are able to bring a socially urgent narrative to a wider stage, reaffirming the power of entertainment to inspire awareness and change.”
Viviana Hadid, Executive Vice President of The Ripple Effect, emphasized: “This series is more than a police drama—it is a call to action against gender-based violence, a universal issue that affects every society. We are eager to bring it soon to other markets, especially Latin America, where sadly this story is all too familiar.”
“Love is a Stranger” follows Vânia Jardim, a seasoned officer in Rio de Janeiro’s Department for the Defense of Women, whose personal trauma parallels the very crimes she investigates. Inspired by real cases, the narrative blends gripping police drama with a socially impactful message, as Vânia faces not only her cases but also a targeted media campaign led by digital influencer Branca Lemos.
The series was created by Ingrid Zavarezzi and Carlos de Andrade and stars renowned Brazilian actress Juliana Knust, who earned a Golden Panda Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance. It premiered on AXN Brazil in October 2024 and will air on Record TV in late 2025.
