The number of pay TV subs in Canada and the U.S. will fall from 111 million in 2015 to 60 million in 2029, as reported in the latest research by Digital TV Research. According to the study, the U.S. will lose 51% of its total (down by 49 million), with Canada down by 23% (3 million). North American pay TV penetration will drop from 85% in 2015 to 43% by 2029. The U.S. will drop below 50% in 2024.
Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said, “The number of pay TV subscribers across the region plummeted by 41 million between 2015 and 2023. Subscription declines will slow, with a fall of 10 million subscribers between 2023 and 2029.”
Previously, the company had reported the number of pay TV subscribers globally will remain at just under 1 billion, which forecasts a slender decline until 2025, with a small recovery thereafter. Moreover, it had forecasted Asia Pacific pay TV revenues would reach US$26 billion by 2028, US$1.6 billion less than 2022.
