TUBI’S VIEW TIME NEARLY DOUBLED IN THE LAST YEAR

Each quarter, the service averaged a 100% increase in total view time. The spike was most likely caused by increased time spent at home during the pandemic and a surge in new Fox content.

According to Fox, Tubi's consumption time has nearly doubled within the last year. The ad-supported streaming service viewers were said to have watched 220 million hours of the ad-supported service in September. “Tubi’s surge in viewership is a testament to 2020 becoming the year of AVOD,” said Tubi CEO Farhad Massoudi in a statement. “As we further grow our offering and capitalize on our partnership across FOX’s IP, we continue to develop a unique value proposition for many of today’s households seeking cost-free premium entertainment.”

During an earning's call, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch revealed that each quarter for the service averaged a 100% increase in total view time. There was no mention of how many active users Tubi has, but he noted that the company’s 33 million monthly users reported in August represented a 65% year-over-year increase. He also said, “total time spent viewing in September alone was 220 million hours.” If Tubi didn’t add a single user since August, that would mean each viewer watched an average of 6.66 hours of Tubi content that month, or about 13 minutes of Tubi per day.

The spike in viewership coincides with increased time spent at home amid the pandemic, which streamers have benefited from this year. Murdoch also attributed the increase in part to the increase in Fox content including “The Masked Singer” and “Lego Masters.” Fox said has been using “The Masked Singer” to introduce viewers to Tubi while also using marketing on Fox and Fox News to drive more users to the AVOD service.

Fox acquired Tubi in March for USD 440 million. The service's growth comes as the company looks to expand outside the U.S. and Canada and into more international markets. For example, Tubi launched in Mexico in June.
