Cineflix Rights has unveiled its MIPCOM 2024 scripted slate of new series and specials, including a crime thriller, a dystopian sci-fi “live action Anime”, the latest instalment of a cult fan favourite, and an eerie mystery. They join returning seasons of hit series and movies from around the world.  Here is a brief overview of each of them.

Based on A.A. Dhand’s best-selling novels, "Virdee" (6x60’, Magical Society for BBC One/BBC iPlayer) is a crime thriller following Harry Virdee (Staz Nair, Rebel Moon), a Bradford cop hunting down a serial killer. His personal life is in chaos, disowned by his family for crossing a religious divide by marrying his wife, Saima (Aysha Kala, Criminal Record), a woman he loves beyond anyone or anything else. When the murderer kidnaps a local police chief’s son and holds the entire city to ransom, Harry realises that he is going to need the help of his brother-in-law Riaz, a drugs kingpin who runs the largest cartel in the county. Pulled together in an alliance that could ruin them both, Harry must make a choice: save himself and his family or save his city. He will not be able to do both.

From producers of "The Walking Dead" and "Invincible", "Heart Attack" (8x45’, Skybound and ROBOT for Fuji TV, Japan) is a dystopian drama which breaks new stylistic ground as “live action Anime”. Set in a post-pandemic Japan, the series follows a segment of the population who have supernatural abilities, known as Variants, persecuted by the government and struggling against oppression because of their power. When two Variants, Ema ("Toko Miura", "Drive My Car") and Umin ("Kanichiro", "Kubi"), meet, they make an unexpected connection that unlocks a secret power. Together, they fight for their existence and freedom, leading to a revolution.

"Wynonna Earp: Vengeance" (1x90’, SEVEN24 Films in association with Cineflix Studios for Tubi) is a new special and the latest instalment of the cult fan favourite which follows Wyatt Earp’s great-great granddaughter as the spicy, hard-living, demon slaying anti-heroine who returns to her hometown of Purgatory once again to battle her greatest foe yet: a psychotic seductress hellbent on revenge against Wynonna… and everyone she loves. Starring Melanie Scrofano ("Bad Blood"), Tim Rozon ("Schitt’s Creek"), Dominique Provost-Chalkley ("Avengers: Age of Ultron"), and Katherine Barrell ("Workin’ Moms").

Based on the novel from C.J. Tudor, and adapted by Hans Rosenfeldt and Camilla Ahlgren, creator and writers of "The Bridge" and "Marcella", "The Burning Girls" (6x60’, Buccaneer for Paramount+, UK) is the story of Reverend Jack Brooks ("Samantha Morton", "The Walking Dead") and her daughter, ("Flo Ruby Stokes", "Bridgerton") who move to the eerie village of Chapel Croft, where two teenage girls vanished without a trace in 1992 and the spirits of two younger girls, known as “The Burning Girls”, allegedly haunt the village chapel.

Returning seasons of hit dramas include the cozy crime series "Whitstable Pearl" (Season 3, 6x60’, Buccaneer for Acorn TV, UK), based on Julie Wassmer’s much-loved novels, and gripping Australian crime drama "Last King of The Cross" (Season 2, 8x60’, HELIUM for Paramount+, Australia) inspired by the rise of a poverty-stricken immigrant who became Australia’s most infamous nightclub mogul.

New additions to Cineflix Rights’ growing movie slate include "Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch" (1x90’, Cineflix Productions, Untitled Entertainment, KMF Film, and the Hungarian Film Incentive for Hallmark Channel, US) and "Twas The Date Before Christmas" (1x90’, Cineflix Productions for Hallmark Channel, US).

Tim Mutimer, CEO, Cineflix Rights briefly described the slate for MIPCOM: “Our unforgettable MIPCOM 2024 scripted slate launches a new detective to the world in Virdee, a gripping crime thriller which will have viewers on the edge of their seats, the return of a cult hit, and the first showcasing of “live action Anime” from producers behind one of TV’s biggest drama franchises. Alongside these, we have returning seasons of some of our buyers’ favourite, acclaimed and award-winning dramas, providing content which will appeal to a wide range of audiences," commented.
