After announcing their alliance at Natpe Miami, Filmax and Gloriamundi will be launching their first project, the series “The Roar of The Butterflies”, fruit of said agreement, at this year's LA Screenings 2021. The series, which has already been sold to Disney´s Star + Latin America and is made up of 13 episodes of 50 minutes each, was created by Juan Pablo Buscarini and tells a fictional version of the thrilling true story of two women who fought back against the most grotesque, cruel and misogynistic tyranny of 20th century Latin America: that of the dictator Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.

The story of the Mirabal sisters has been so significant that every 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is celebrated, in memory of the day they were assassinated by Trujillo's regime in 1960.

Starring a mixed cast of Spanish and Caribbean talent, including Susana Abaitua (Patria, Crazy For Her, I Know Who You Are), Sandy Hernández (On the Block), Guillermo Toledo (I'm So Excited!) and Luis Alberto Garcia (Che), the series tells the story of the touching, yet ultimately tragic friendship between two, young women, Arantxa Oyamburu and Minerva Mirabal, whose encounters and misencounters over two decades were fundamental in bringing down Rafael Leónidas Trujillo's brutal dictatorship.

The series is produced by Tandem Films, Gloriamundi Producciones and Mediabyte. The showrunners are Juan Pablo Buscarini (Chinese take away) and Pablo Bossi (Monzón).

“After reading the Nobel Literature prize-winning author, Mario Vargas Llosa's unforgettable novel, The Feast of the Goat, an impressive portrayal of the destructive corruption of dictatorships, I was fascinated by the true story that took place on this small, Caribbean island, with the Mirabal sisters and Trujillo as protagonists. The Roar of the Butterflies is an extremely important story, filled with emotions, solidarity and the fight for injustice, that we hope will help to denounce and eradicate the violence suffered by women the world over”, says Juan Pablo Buscarini, showrunner.

Ivan Diaz, Head of International at Filmax, speaks passionately about the series: “It's great to see how our alliance with Gloriamundi, which we are very excited about, is already reaping its rewards. We're proud to be presenting to our clients at LA Screenings this new project, which is characteristic of the best fictional TV series that are currently being produced internationally. The series' combination of friendship, personal struggle, sensuality and elements of political thriller make this a highly promising project.”

“The Roar of The Butterflies” will start shooting in July, 2021. Buyers can already read the script of the pilot episode.
