Studio 100 Film has announced the launch of its latest animated feature, “Halloween vs Day of the Dead,” which will be presented at the 2025 American Film Market (AFM). The CGI family comedy-adventure is a co-production between Munich-based Studio 100 International and Mexico’s Lunch Films, targeting a global theatrical release in 2028. Principal development on the film has now commenced following two years of creative planning between the partners.
“This is an exciting opportunity to share a story we hold close to our hearts,” said García, Founder of Lunch Films. “Together, we’re creating a vibrant, heartfelt film that honors both traditions while telling a timeless tale of friendship, unity and hope. We believe audiences everywhere will connect with the journey of these two children from rival villages.”
Producer Gerry Cardoso emphasized the film’s cultural resonance, adding, “We wanted to create a film that’s not only fun and full of adventure but also celebrates the heart of Mexican culture. It’s a playful clash of two iconic traditions, told through a story that’s emotional and deeply rooted in family and identity.”
Lorena Booth, Senior Manager of Sales & Acquisition at Studio 100 Film, reflected on her personal connection to the story: “Growing up Mexican in New York, I looked forward to twice as many sweets and double the ghosts. Halloween and Día de los Muertos were both part of my life, so when this project came along, it ultimately felt like home. After two years of spirited—and occasionally spooky—talks, I’m thrilled we’re kicking off development and sharing it at the film market.”
The 80-minute film blends the eerie charm of Halloween with the rich heritage of Día de los Muertos. It follows two young heroes, Pumpkid and Bony Lu, from rival towns—Halloween Ville and Day of the Dead Town—who must team up to recover stolen candies before both their festivals are ruined. Their journey brings together a group of quirky allies, taking audiences through magical landscapes and uncovering a centuries-old divide. The narrative explores themes of friendship, family, courage, and cultural understanding.
Written and directed by Celso García (“The Thin Yellow Line,” “The Great Seduction”), the film brings together executive producers Martin Krieger of Studio 100 International and Axel Vielma and Fernando Estrada of Lunch Films, with Thorsten Wegener, Celso García, and Gerry Cardoso serving as producers.
The film is designed to appeal to global audiences while spotlighting diverse cultural storytelling. Studio 100 International will handle global sales, bringing the title to buyers during AFM as part of its growing portfolio of international family content.
