LeBron James’ and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company has formed a partnership with the European indie studio Mediawan, focusing on developing and co-producing original film and TV content. The collaboration aims to enhance both companies' reach within their respective markets. The alliance will target a broad range of projects, spanning movies, scripted and unscripted series, and animation, with an eye on production across North America, Europe, and Africa.

This deal provides Mediawan with another strategic entry into the U.S. market, complementing its previous acquisition of a majority stake in Plan B in 2022. Founded in 2015 by producer Pierre-Antoine Capton, alongside telco mogul Xavier Niel and financier Matthieu Pigasse, Mediawan is supported by investment firm KKR and headquartered in Paris.

Moving forward, SpringHill and Mediawan intend to collaborate on adapting their existing intellectual properties, including localized versions, while exploring new international distribution opportunities. Several joint projects are already in the pipeline, including “Weekend Warriors,” a basketball-themed production to be co-produced by SpringHill and Mediawan's Plan B.

“Weekend Warriors” is based on the 2023 German film "Weekend Rebels," a true story about a father and his autistic son who embark on a journey to find the son's favorite soccer team by attending every match. Mediawan’s German division, Wiedemann & Berg, produced the original film.

In addition, Mediawan will be expanding SpringHill’s hit show “The Shop” into the French market. Originally created under SpringHill’s Uninterrupted label, “The Shop” recently became an independent entity. After announcing a U.K. version hosted by Idris Elba, a French adaptation is now in the works, targeting audiences across French-speaking Europe and Africa. The unscripted Emmy-winning series, co-created by Randy Mims and Paul Rivera, showcases candid conversations with high-profile figures from sports, music, film, and pop culture. The French version will be developed by Mediawan’s Black Dynamite Production, while the U.S. version continues on its dedicated YouTube channel, after originally airing on HBO.

Maverick Carter expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, saying: “We are excited to deepen our relationship with Pierre-Antoine and the Mediawan team as it allows us, together, to bring to light authentic, impactful content for the world to experience.”

Mediawan Group CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton emphasized the growing synergy with SpringHill, stating: “The more we’ve worked with Maverick, LeBron, and the dynamic team at SpringHill, the more eager we’ve become to expand our collaboration. This new deal reflects our shared commitment to telling exciting original stories and a shared vision for adapting beloved favorites for new audiences around the world. Our first two projects, ‘Weekend Warriors’ and ‘The Shop,’ are just the beginning of what we anticipate will be a long and fruitful relationship.”

This partnership reflects Mediawan’s strategy of joining forces with top creative talents to boost its presence in key markets, including English-speaking regions. Alongside Plan B, which recently produced Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and the upcoming film “Wolfs” starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, Mediawan has expanded its portfolio. The company now manages over 80 production outfits worldwide and recently acquired a majority stake in U.K. producers Misfits, alongside investing in Our Films, the new venture from producers Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani.

SpringHill’s recent projects include "Rez Ball," co-written and directed by Sydney Freeland, "A Radical Act: The Renee Montgomery Story" debuting on Roku in October, NBC’s game show “The Wall,” and the Netflix series “Starting 5,” featuring LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, and Domantas Sabonis, premiering next month.
