MIPCOM 2024 to kick off at Cannes

The 40th edition of the international market will take place between October 21 to 24.

The time has come for the 40th edition of MIPCOM to kick off at the Palais des Festivals, in Cannes. This year, Spain will be the event’s Country of Honor, with a programme highlighting the country’s significant growth in recent years as a major international production hub and provider of quality content to global audiences. Moreover, a series of keynotes and screenings from major industry players will take place during the upcoming 4 days.

SPAIN, COUNTRY OF HONOR

A prominent series of events will both celebrate Spain’s creative sector and promote further international collaboration; events across the week will range from high profile screenings, the staging of producers’ panels focusing on co-production opportunities and a Spanish-themed MIPCOM Cannes Opening Night Party amongst others. The programme is curated in partnership with ICEX Spain Trade & Investment (public entity of the Ministry of Economy, Commerce and Business). The Country of Honor activity forms part of the “Spain, Audiovisual Hub of Europe” plan, a major five year €1.6 billion public investment initiative targeting a 30% rise in audiovisual production in the country by 2025 within the framework of the Recovery Plan, transformation, and resilience funded by NextGenerationUE.

KEYNOTES AGENDA

Kicking off this year’s keynotes, on October 21 at 10:20 in the Grand Auditorium, a joint keynote with Head of International Originals, Amazon MGM Studios, James Farrell, and Akihiko Okamoto, President and Representative Director, Yoshimoto will take place. The executives will explore the origination and approach that has made “LOL: Last One Laughing” one of the most successful and traveled formats of recent years and Prime Video’s most watched title ever in several countries. The session is part of the market’s Media Mastermind Keynote series.

On October 21 at 15:00, in the Grand Auditorium, All3Media CEO Jane Turton is to give a keynote interview staged as a fireside chat forming part of the “C-Suite Conversations” series being presented across the opening afternoon of the market in partnership with Variety.

On October 21 at 16.20, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey will give a keynote interview staged as a fireside chat in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals. The keynote forms part of the “C-Suite Conversations” series presented across the opening afternoon of the market in partnership with Variety.

On October 22 at 15:00, in the Grand Auditorium, Dan Cohen, Chief Content Licensing Officer, Paramount, President, Republic Pictures, will give a Media Mastermind keynote. During this main stage conversation, Cohen will share insights into the worldwide content licensing strategy he leads within the multi-faceted global studio, and additionally be joined in Cannes by special guests.

On October 23 at 11:15, in the Grand Auditorium, The Mediapro Studio will outline their US & Canada expansion plans and a robust English Language content slate during a keynote which will be part of the annual MIPCOM Cannes Media Mastermind series. The keynote will be presented by Laura Fdez. Espeso, CEO of The Mediapro Studio, and JC Acosta, Head of The Mediapro Studio US & Canada, and will be joined by the studio’s creative leadership, Erika Kennair, Head of Scripted Content, and Pam Healey, Head of Unscripted Content.

MIP INNOVATION LAB

The MIP Innovation Lab at MIPCOM 2024 will feature a curated daily programme focusing on FAST, AI, Streaming, and Connected TV. The event brings together over 60 international companies, with key players sharing insights and strategies through summits, interviews, and networking opportunities.

The "Applied AI Summit" will take place on October 21 at 10:15, with companies like Adventr, Google, Banijay Entertainment, and Largo.ai showcasing AI applications in production and monetization, and discussing ethical and legal challenges.

On October 22 at 09:00, the "Global Streamer Talks" will feature interviews by Evan Shapiro with industry leaders such as David Eilenberg (Roku), Claire Basini (TF1), and Olivier Jollet (Paramount), discussing streaming strategies, market challenges, and collaborations.

The "Global FAST&AVOD Summit" returns on October 22 at 14:30, featuring pioneers from Banijay Rights, BBC Studios, Roku, and Warner Bros. Discovery, focusing on the international growth of FAST and AVOD through discussions and roundtables.

The "Connected TV Summit" on October 23 at 09:00 will explore TV operating systems, user experience, and monetization models, with participation from companies like Samsung TV Plus, VIZIO, and All3Media International.

At 14:00 on October 23, "Why YouTube Matters: Engaging Audiences & Boosting Revenue" will feature Neil Price (YouTube) and Wayne Davison (Little Dot Studios) discussing strategies for driving viewership and revenue through YouTube.

The event will conclude with "Insights That Matter: Fueling Your Next Strategic Move" on October 23 at 14:45, featuring reports from RTLAdAlliance, 3Vision, and Omdia, offering key takeaways and trends for future business strategies.
